How to pray even when you do not feel like praying

“(Gets into bed and Starts to pray)…..Dear Lord, thank you for today, I am so ….. (Begins to fall asleep)”

“……..oh Lord, why I do I feel this way? ……..”

“……..I will definitely pray tomorrow……..”

“……..I am so tired today……..”

“……..I keep forgetting to pray these days……..”

Friends, if you can relate to one of the above monologue or something close to it, I am here to tell you that it is not because you are a bad christian. Yes, it is very human-like to not feel like you want to pray. I mean we are humans, we fall short of His Glory every day.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

But we should try and not make this a habit, as it becomes a loop hole for the devils work in us.

There are times in my life where I genuinely do not feel like praying, like at all. I mean, this world can overwhelm you, current happenings around the world, it could be your work life, your schooling, your parenting, your relationships, your family, your government, or just life in general. The list could only go on.

I totally relate to this struggle, and hence the reason why I decided to share these 5 tips/ways that helped me get through the “I don’t feel like praying phase” and hopefully they help you too.

  1. Take good care of yourself and talk to God about it:

2 Corinthians 1:4 “We feel selfish. Yet, God says, we can only comfort others with the comfort we first receive ourselves”

1 Kings 19:7 “Arise and eat. For the journey is too great for you.”

See child, we are still human in the flesh, so it is very easy for us to get weary. We should take good care of ourselves in order to serve the Lord in all freshness. Go freshen up, go eat, go drink something – be hydrated take a long needed walk, and get some rest. It’s really hard to pray when you are really exhausted, hungry, and have had a long day. In other words, rejuvenate yourself for the Lord! And then talk to God about how you feel. You have been BOAZED and bought, foot washed and ind-welled by Christ. You can risk honesty with GOD. Trust God’s hold on you more than your hold on God as we tend to falter, but our Perfect God never will!

  1. Set Reminders:

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

I decided to set little reminders on my phone to remind me to pray. You can do this, by setting it as an alarm, as a note,or as a notification at whichever time that is convenient for you. Keeping a calendar with *A to do* really makes a difference. It will be tricky in the beginning, but as time goes by, you will get the hang of it and even begin to enjoy making these notes. Try this and let me know if it helps.

  1. Feed Your Spirit:

Remember the saying, *what goes in must come out?*. Well, we all know when you listen to a song over and over, your subconscious mind ends up grasping it, and at some point, you find yourself singing it, right? This shows that you are a big percentage of what you hear, see, and feel. So when you feed Christ-like music to your hearing, read Christ-related books, and watch Christ-like material…..guess what’s bound to happen? Exactly. You become what you feed yourself, so go ahead and feed you spirit with the right material. With this, words of prayer will just flow out of you.Try it and see!

  1. When you feel overwhelmed by the world, Whisper His Name:

Psalm 147: 3-5. “He heals the broken hearted…He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them”

Yes, He knows your name.  Remember, when you first got your first love letter? How it had your name, and how you kept reading it over and over again ….. Well, now picture this, God the Father Knows your name! It honestly never gets better than this in my head. This really makes me feel so good on the inside. I hope it makes you feel just as good. When I cannot pray, I recite the Lord’s prayer until it feeds into my soul. But most times I sit somewhere and just WHISPER HIS NAME or RECITE WORDS HE HAS said to us from the Bible. My favourite one is, reciting that the Lord will never reject the heart of a repentant soul from Psalms 51:17. Oh the power in doing this, I cannot explain, you just have to experience it yourself. Just keep doing that and experience His Presence. More often than not, words will just flow out of you. Indeed, precious it is to proclaim, ‘Christ died for the World’, even sweeter it is to whisper, ‘Christ died for me’.

  1. When you are unable to pray, The Bible guarantees us that Jesus is still doing it for us:

Roman 8:34 “Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died … is also interceding for us”

Sometimes, I discuss my unfeeling to pray with someone. In most cases than not, its my sister or my prayer partner. (We thank God for family and friends) and they pray to God for me (intercession ). But the main reason I decided to close with intercession,is because it does not mean whilst you are growing through such a phase, the Lord Jesus Christ has forgotten about you. No, never, Be rest assured that even those days/nights that you have no words to say in prayer, Jesus is praying for you. Because Jesus will never get tired of you, nor your unrest. Nothing in this world can separate you from His Love.  For in the presence of God in defiance of Satan. Jesus Christ rises to your defense. Sincere Reminder: Jesus died for you! John 3:16.
